It's been a tough day in the world of oral health

My poor Justin! Today was the day he started orthodontic treatment... It's called Phase 1 and it will last nine months. He is MISERABLE. He has expanders for both upper and lower jaws, cemented on by bands on his last molars. The upper one goes across his palate. He feels like he can't swallow, food is getting trapped between it and the roof of his mouth and he is (of course) very sore. In addition to the soreness of teeth moving, the new metal is causing his cheeks and tongue to be blistered. I go from telling myself, "you and Keith are doing something good for him" to "you and Keith are torturing this poor 9 year old child, traumatizing him for life".
They promised me that in 2 days he would be completely used to it; talking, eating and swallowing normally again. The worst thing is, I have to crank the one on top twice a day. Could they ask a mother to do anything worse to her child but torture him? He cried most of today. Instead of going back to school, I took him to see "Kung Foo Panda" to take his mind off of choking on his saliva, it seemed to work. Hopefully I'll be posting before Friday about what a champ he is and that he's doing great.
