a weekend full of good sports and luxury living

We had a full weekend, most of which was spent in Charlotte. More importantly, everything brought a good outcome, and wait'll I tell you about our accommodations!

First and foremost, Kendall had a soccer tryout on Friday evening. She wants to move from recreational play to the "challenge" league, which is competitive. Her main reason was that in challenge, you practice twice a week and play in more tournaments and she is all about playing more. She'd play everyday if possible. So, on Friday evening, she and I drove to North Raleigh for a two hour try out. The girls in her age group were moved through several different drills while coaches with clipboards watched and made notes. The girls wore numbers pinned onto their shirts so the coaches could easily identify them. I was a little concerned with Kendall's energy level that night. After two sleepless nights with a body-wracking cough that has been with her all week, and then a full day at school, she was whipped before ever starting. I got to sit on a cold metal bleacher for two hours in a 40 degree chill and watch her shine out there. We had two messages on our recorder this evening when returning back to town letting us know she has been selected for the challenge league! She is so excited and we are very happy for her. It's the first time either of our kids has tried out for a sport, so to make it was just a nice way to cap our weekend.

We had plans to attend the Carolina Panthers vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers game this afternoon as a family. We decided to drive down on Saturday and stay at a hotel so we wouldn't be rushed on Sunday making the drive, finding parking and all that. Little did I know that we'd be staying at the brand new Ritz-Carlton in downtown Charlotte. Wooo-hooo, was it swanky. It is the cleanest hotel I've ever seen, I walked around the room barefoot, confident in the cleanliness of the floors. The hotel staff were bend over backwards nice and it was just a wonderful experience. Oh, and the bed...one of the best I've stayed in. I told Keith he has spoiled me and I can't stay anywhere else in Charlotte now! In addition to that surprise, he also got us tickets to the Saturday evening NBA game (that happened to be a half block walk from our hotel), so we saw the Bobcats beat the 76ers, from a box seat with a full service dinner buffet. While watching that game, we had tv's at our table where we got to see the second half whipping of Florida by Alabama. What more could you ask for?!?! (we were pumped about that). Back in our hotel, Justin and Keith watched a Rolls Royce pull in and out of that car came Steven Jackson, who plays for the Bobcats and is apparently living at the Ritz while he house hunts. Justin got an autograph and a photo taken with him and returned to the room on cloud 9. While I intended to root for the Bucs today, once we got in the stadium and the game started, I found I really didn't care who won; I didn't feel an allegiance to either team. (Maybe I'm more of a Cardinals fan these days?) The Panthers won, we had a blast and had wonderful seats.

Prior to leaving town, on Saturday, I took Kendall to the doctor to plead for an idea as to how we can subdue that nighttime relentless cough that has kept her (and her parents) awake for two nights, especially since the four of us were to be in a hotel room together that night. The doctor prescribed a potent cough syrup that he dubbed "liquid gold" and said that if it didn't work, nothing would. I gave her the tiny 1/2 teaspoonful at bedtime and she stopped coughing immediately... and didn't make a peep all night. I went to her at 2:30am to see if she was breathing, she was so quiet. (she was, by the way). Liquid gold indeed!

So there you have our sports-minded weekend update, full of good wins (may I say, again, thank you Alabama), good family time and comfy sleeping. 'Night, all!
