Today was opening day for the movie The Secret Life Of Bees. A few of my friends and I made plans to go to lunch and see the movie. We had all read the book and considered it one of our favorites. We had lunch at California Pizza Kitchen and all chose a spring roll appetizer (we ususally don't all order the same thing, but today we were saving room for popcorn!), then headed to the theater. You could tell that most people there were going to see the same movie as we were, lots of groups of women :-)
The movie was excellent. The acting was wonderful! I had not seen Queen Latifa act in a movie and was very impressed with her in this movie; she was August Boatwright. I have seen Dakota Fanning in a couple of movies and as always, she was terrific. Our local newspapers' movie critic (who many think must hate movies due to his always negative opinions) had an article in todays paper saying the movie was well acted and a "feel good" flick, but was not very deep. I couldn't disagree more! What Lilly has spent her whole life dealing with is no shallow matter. The relationship between the Boatwright sisters and Lilly and Rosaleen was not shallow, nor was the relationship between the sisters themselves. Desegregation is no shallow subject either.
So, poohey on the movie critic. I would say this movie is a must see...but I promise you'll enjoy it more if you read the book first. We all had a good cry while watching it, which is always fun when you are with a group of girlfriends!
