January may seems like an odd time to "get into" ice cream. But, in case you didn't know, I am a little odd! So, wouldn't it be totally "me" to develop a small passion for ice cream in January?!? Yep, I think so too.
My passion isn't for eating it per se. I've never been one to crave ice cream. But, I am married to a man who eats it most every night. Vanilla. And, it has to be Harris Teeter's store brand. Harris Teeter is the priciest grocery store we have in the area, and I hate them for that :) I try to avoid the place, but since Keith's ice cream absolutely MUST come from there, we are forced to stop in regularly to feed his craving.
That, coupled with my love for the man, therefore concern for his health, led me to the start of this adventure....
I bought an ice cream maker! An indoor number from Cuisinart that was on sale :))) My theory was this: If I can find a recipe that is as delicious as Harris Teeter's, we can 1. Save Money and 2. I can tweak recipes and produce a more healthful version that he will grow to love just as much as the stuff from Harris Teeter. Plus, when one of the kids might be craving something, I could make it from scratch and have better control over ingredients such as fat and sugar content. And preservatives!!
So...I was being all sneaky making the first batch so I could surprise Keith. I followed a basic vanilla recipe to start, because I need to gain experience. I think I have a lot of potential!! The taste was really delicious. Justin and Keith have both sampled it. Well, Keith has had a bowl, Justin a few spoonfuls as it was in the chilling process and I had a spoonful to taste. They approved! I am happy!! Now to move onto the perfecting of consistency and then making it a bit more healthful.
A new challenge! I am up for that! Maybe by the real ice cream season I will be an expert!!!
