So, I've been watching on public television the wake county school board meeting since 2pm this afternoon. The meeting ended at 9:30pm. I did other things while it was on, but thankfully was able to be at home during this time- it was an important meeting. The board was deciding the calendar for schools of my kids!! When the new board took office in December, their main objective was to end "mandatory year round schools". After meetings, public hearings, surveys to parents and more public hearings, five schools were recommended to consider changing (back) to a traditional calendar. Justin will be going to middle school next year- a new school still under construction no less- and it was one on the block for consideration. It was passed by vote to open as a traditional calendar school, which I fully support. Unfortunately, our elementary school was not voted on tonight, though was mentioned and may be considered but possibly not in time for the next school year. With Kendall having one more year of elementary school after this year, it is very likely that they will be on two different schedules next year, one on a traditional schedule of late August-early June and an early July to late June for Kendall. After almost three years on a multi-track year round schedule, I now know that traditional is the way to go, and so am willing to live one year on two schedules to know that after that, we will be DONE and back to traditional forever. This means that after our current year ends on June 30, Justin and Kendall will have July 4th week, followed by the last two weeks of July/first week of August off together, then two weeks at Christmas, a four day weekend for Thanksgiving in common and that will be it for the whole year!! Kendall's three week spring track out will come AFTER Justin's one week spring break! It'll be interesting and I feel for the families who's kids are further apart in age than mine. It was a very spirited meeting for the board that began at 9am and went longer than 12 hours and included many insults, heated discussions as well as a near arrest!
If that weren't exciting enough, we are expecting "two to four inches of snow" tonight!!

Wow, that's crazy. I can't believe they'll have totally different schedules! The board meeting sounds like pretty interesting daytime TV, though :). I'm glad things are turning out the way you want them to. I can't believe Justin's old enough for middle school! Love ya!
Whoops, that was me--just so you know. I guess David's signed into his Google account right now, and Connor once started a blog under it. So anyway, it's me, Summer!
