Post Surgery Update

Yesterday was Justin's surgery.  He was anticipating the day with a great attitude where the only thing that could deter him from that was the extended wait as the OR was running behind and he had been fasting since 11pm the night before surgery.

Rather than start at noon, he was taken in at 1:45.  He was finished just after 3pm when the surgeon came to the waiting room to report that all went well and that he was happy with the results.

The only glitch in the day was the nausea as he woke up in recovery.  It could be a combination of all the anesthesia mixed with the pain meds given in his IV as he came to (I think the nurse was a little too pro-medication, though she was very very sweet), but the nurse also shared that patients with afternoon surgeries typically have a bit more trouble with nausea due to the extended time without food or beverages.

She gave him a dose of antinausea medication that made him very drowsy and that helped bring his color back.  He never did throw up, thankfully.  He slept the whole way home, as we drove through the pharmacy drive through , then woke long enough to be transported inside to the guest bed, where he fell back asleep immediately and slept til almost 10pm!

He woke without pain, without nausea, but starved.  He ate everything he could get his hands on, hung out with the family a little bit, then went back to bed.  I gave him tylenol even though he was not in pain, and he proceeded to sleep all night long in comfort!

We could have done without filling the narcotic, stool softener and anti nausea meds because he hasn't needed a single thing.  I am so thankful as I worried that having some bone sawed off would be quite uncomfortable.  No nausea, no pain, no problem with using the bathroom= all good!!

The hardest things will be keeping him laying low until he sees the surgeon on Wednesday and keeping him out of the shower until Monday night, as he is not to unwrap his bandages until then.  They have his leg wrapped in an ace bandage from thigh to foot to reduce swelling and keep the wound protected.

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers.  Wish you were here to help entertain him until he's been cleared as a free man once again :)
