How'd it get to be late August already??

Wow, time does fly. Can't believe it's back to school next week! I guess when you've travelled a little here and there and stayed busy in between, many weeks can pass by in a blur!

We started August off with a week in Florida. I wanted to go down and help my gram while she was in rehab. The family came too and we stayed in my gram's condo and I spent my days with her while Keith and the kids went to the beach, go carting and the like. They came each afternoon for a visit and then we left her around dinner time and went out to get some dinner ourselves and then either hit the arcade at celebration station or go back to the condo to play a board game. It was a great week and I am so glad I was there with my gram. One morning I joined Keith and the kids at the beach (and am SO glad I did- I forget just how gorgeous Clearwater Beach is. The sand, the calm water, seeing right to the bottom). I am not kidding when I tell you that no more than seven feet in front of me and behind the kids and Keith, two dolphin swam through, fins popped up right in front of my face!!! It was so cool. They were right in among all the swimmers in waist deep water. They continued to play right at the edge of the swimming area all morning.

Right upon returning home, sports practices began. Two days of soccer for Kendall and two days of football for Justin. In temps around 99 degrees with a heat index of 105-110. Huge jugs of water, coolers of ice water with washcloths and ice cold Gatorade accompany us each day. Justin put pads on for the first time two weeks ago. That with a helmet seems like torture. He comes off the field completely drenched. The first time they made contact and the coaches were telling them to "rip through" each other, I was so nervous for Justin. After all the years of teaching him to be gentle, non aggressive...now he's being told to rip through the other guy!! I've desensitized to it a little and he absolutely LOVES it. I never saw football as a violent sport until it was my boy in the pads :-)

I'm five weeks out from my September 25th USMC Ultimate Mud Run Challenge. I've been working hard since the first of June to get ready for this. In addition to body pump, (which I'm currently down from three days a week to two so I can do other things to prep for this race), I am running (and hating every minute of it) and the biggest challenge is, getting up at 5:30 to meet with my "POD" group two days a week and have my crazy-butt kicking-but I love her neighbor take us through some kind of insanely difficult mud run training workout. This morning, it was at the park running up and down hills, army crawling through the wet grass, running with two 20 pound kettle bells in our hands along with push ups, burpees, scurpees and trx rowing. Sound insane? It is!! Janine gives as much mental training as she does physical and right now, it is just what I need to keep my mind in the right place.

On Monday, Kendall heads back to school. She went for three weeks and then has had three weeks off. It has gone by so quickly and has had more sleepovers, playdates, trips to the lake than I can count. In October, she breaks again while Justin will be in school. I'm looking forward to some special time with her where I'm sure we'll do lots of girlie things.

We took Justin to open house at his new middle school yesterday. School begins for him on Wednesday. He's going to a brand new school and it is gorgeous and could easily be mistaken for a high school. It's HUGE. Just as we were hoping, he got his 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Lynch, as his homeroom teacher and social studies teacher. None of his buddies from 5th grade ended up in the same homeroom, which after being year- round with these same kids for three years, I think it'll be good for them to meet new kids. But, somehow, they all found each other at the open house and had a blast exploring their new school together. After each of them met their homeroom teacher, they went off together to find the gym, cafeteria, locker rooms, PE and health rooms, front office, media center. He is now very excited for this new adventure called middle school. We are excited for him!

I guess that about covers our August. Still can't believe almost a month went by without a post. I'll try not to go so long next time...
